The reality is that each person today is just one of about 7 billion human beings, and humans are just one of about 10 million species on Earth. Earth is just one of about 100 billion planets in the Milky Way, and the entire universe has about 2 trillion galaxies. A human lifespan is only about one three-thousandth of human history, and human history is only one two-ten-thousandth of Earth's history. In other words, we are incredibly tiny and short-lived, and no matter what achievements we make, their impact is negligible. At the same time, we instinctively hope to have meaning and to evolve, yet we can only generate a tiny bit of meaning. All these tiny bits of meaning add up to be the driving force behind the evolution of the universe.
The question is how important we are and how to evolve. Are we important to other people? (They, like us, are not important from a grand perspective.) Are we important in some larger sense that we can never truly understand? Or is the question of whether we are important not important at all, so we should forget it and enjoy ourselves in the moment?
